Till Lindemann |
The band was born from an idea of Till Lindermann, who would later become the vocalist, and who wanted to form a heavy band when he was still in the former Federal Republic of Germany. He then joined other musicians who also fled the country, including Richard Z. Krupè, who would play guitar and accompany on backing vocals, Paul Landers, who would play rhythm guitar and accompany on backing vocals, Christian Lorenz, who would play keyboards, Oliver Riedel, who would play bass and Christph Schineider, who would play drums.
Their first album Herzeleid (1994) was a great success for their live concerts and maintained their popularity in the charts until the release of their second album, Sehnsucht, which marked the band's debut outside Europe, mainly in America and Asia. In a few weeks it entered world tops along with other bands of the moment. Since then they have crossed the language barrier. Their native language they consider to be perfect for their music and they want to keep it that way. Then the promotion of Sehnsucht started with the Live Aus Berlin concert. In 1999 they opened for Kiss on their Psycho Circus tour through Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In 2001 a new album was released, which was called "Mutter", with which the band became internationally acclaimed, achieving a double platinum for this work. Five singles were extracted from it, some of which were included in soundtracks of some Hollywood movies, such as "Resident Evil", "The Matrix" or "Hellboy". Almost all their songs are in German. However, the band recorded English versions of Engel , Du hast and Amerika, as well as covers of the songs Stripped and Pet Sematary. In addition, the songs Amerika (German version), Stirb nicht vor mir and Moskau contain not only verses in German but also in English and Russian, respectively; they also have a song in Spanish which I will not write down because of its title but you can look it up.
It should be noted that the band is very fond of pyrotechnics, in particular its leader and vocalist "Till Lindemann", which is a consummate specialist in the subject, turning all their concerts into a great show. Talking about their lyrics, these are a fundamental element as they usually deal with taboo or controversial topics such as sadomasochism ("Bestrafe Mich", "Ich tu dir weh"), incest ("Spiel mit mir", "Wiener Blut", "Tier" or "Laichzeit"), voyeurism ("Feuer und Wasser", "Weit weg"), criticism of the US government, ("Amerika", "Zerstoren"), rape ("Weißes Fleisch", "Liebe ist für alle da", "Hallomann"), sexual abuse by the clergy ("Halleluja", "Zeig dich"), necrophilia ("Heirate mich"), cannibalism ("Mein Teil", "Eifersucht") and religious symbols ("Asche zu Asche"). Many lyrics are influenced by various literary works, especially German. The song "Dalai Lama" is an adaptation of Goethe's Der Erlkönig. The song "Rosenrot" is based on Goethe's poem Heideröslein; "Du riechst so gut" could be inspired by Patrick Süskind's book "Perfume" and "Stein um Stein" by Edgar Allan Poe's story The Cask of Amontillado.
